The 8 Worst Remakes Of All Time

Fans don’t always like remakes as much as the originals. These are some cases of remakes that fans didn’t like as much as the originals.
So far in 2023, Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 are two of the most talked about games. It’s strange because they are new versions of games that came out more than 10 years ago. Did they get better reviews than they did back then?
Well, isn’t that the big question? Even if they are practically better in almost every way, not many remakes score better than the original games. Numbers are strange, so let’s look at these examples to get an idea of how they work. Is Metacritic’s review system a little off, or are these remakes really worse games?
Cave Story

This was first given away for free in Japan as a PC game. Cave Story made it to the Wii in the end, and Metacritic gave it an 89. After this, there have been a number of ports to platforms, including a digital download for 3DS. The original version did make it to a handheld system, but it was also redone for the Nintendo 3DS.
Cave Story 3D is the same game, but it has full 3D models instead of tiny sprites and a few small changes here and there. It’s also a good game, but Metacritic gives it a lower score of 82.
Crash Bandicoot: Warped

Crash Bandicoot: Warped is the only major game for the PS1 that got a score of 91 on Metacritic. Sane Trilogy was a collection of the first three games that were remade and put into one neat little package. Crash Team Racing and Crash Bash are two other games from the PS1 era. But they aren’t important right now.The Crash Bandicoot N.
The PS4 version got an 80, which was the best score. How does that score compare to the other two games? It’s hard to say, but once again, love for the original platform wins out.
Final Fantasy 7

Final Fantasy 7 was a huge hit, and the fact that it got 92 reviews shows that. It got people who hadn’t played RPGs before to love the genre and the Final Fantasy name. The remake is totally different, so it makes sense that it got a lower score.
It’s not a 1:1 translation, but more like one part of a series of games that are planned. The PS4 version got an 87, while the PS5 port did a little better with an 89. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade was already a great game, but Yuffie really made it even better.
GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007 changed how shared games worked on the N64. It was also a big step forward for games based on movies with licenses, which usually turned out badly. It’s the James Bond game with the best reviews up to this point. So, when a remake was revealed, it wasn’t a big surprise, but there were some strange decisions along the way.
Pierce Brosnan’s role as Bond in the movies has been taken over by Daniel Craig in the remake for Wii. Is that why Metacritic gave the version an 81 instead of a 96?
Luigi’s Mansion

Nintendo talked about adding 3D to the GameCube at one point, which some people may not know. One of the games they meant to use it with was Luigi’s Mansion, but the idea was dropped early on in the making of this Mario spinoff. With the 3DS remake, the game would finally be able to be played in 3D.
The original got a 78, and the remake on 3DS got a 74, so there’s not much difference between the two scores. Reviewers didn’t seem to think that the 3D was enough to make it better.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

The Mario series got its third RPG spinoff with Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. This time, Mario was always helped by his brother, who was the only other person in the party. It was one of the more active RPGs at the time because battles were still turn-based and orders were given randomly. It got a 90 on the Game Boy Advance, which was a good score.
Years later, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions gave it a new look on the 3DS. The main game was an exact copy of the original, but there was an extra mode that was kind of like a real-time strategy game where Bowser led his army. On Metacritic, the reboot got an 81.
Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid was one of the games that helped the business move forward because of the PS1. Nobody had ever done stealth gaming that well before. The story was epic, and the different actors had a lot to say to each other. With a 94, Flappy Bird is one of the best games on the system.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, which was made just for the GameCube, got a solid 85. It was never put out again on that system. It’s too bad because, in many ways, it’s almost like starting over.
Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is the version that everyone is talking about the most right now. The GameCube version got a 96, which made it the best-reviewed game in the series. I’m sure a new version with more bells and whistles would have done better, right? Well, 93 on PS5 isn’t terrible for the version of Resident Evil 4, but it’s not a 96.
Capcom is probably happy with the numbers because this thing is selling like hotcakes, no matter what the score is. Fans can be sure that more remakes of the series will come out in the future.
